In the middle ages the town of
L'Isle
sur la Sorgue was originally a city of fishermen. It was an island
surrounded by marshlands which were slowly drained by the construction of
canals both in and around the town, hence its name "
Venice
of the Comtat". In the 12th century water wheels were built to grind
flour, later, in the 19th century these were used for the silk
and woollen industries which made the town extremely rich. At this time
there were 72 water wheels, many of which survive to this day, adding to
the town's charm. To this day the Sorgue is a Grade 1 fishing river
for trout and grayling.
